Colorado School of Mines is pleased to accept applications for an Engineering Project Manager. The person in this integral role manages a portfolio of projects such as student housing, research labs, office redesigns, classroom reconfigurations and so much more-the Office of Design and Construction (ODC) oversees over 180 projects of various scope in any given year.

As part of the Office of Design and Construction team at Mines, the person in this role does work that impacts the student experience at Mines in alignment with our Mines @150 strategic goal to be a top-of-mind and first-choice university of students, partners, faculty and staff. The successful candidate for this role has experience working closely with internal and external partners, leading project teams, managing budgets, negotiating fees, and selecting consultants and contractors. They are accustomed to fast-paced environments and skilled at seeing projects through from the pre-design phase to completion. This position works primarily on campus in Golden, Colorado, with occasional remote work opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities

Project Management Services

Developing project scope, schedule and budgets based on meeting with various faculty and staff.

Hiring and directing the work of outside Professionals or developing design depending on the individual project.

Applying appropriate engineering practices, codes and standards to solve particular circumstances, negotiating contracts with design professionals, reviewing design documents, estimating project costs.

Overseeing bid process and contracting general contractors.

Making field observations and/or directing other staff in making observations and inspections to assure projects are completed according to specifications and applicable codes.

Facilitating construction progress meetings, reviewing change orders and shop drawings, managing project scope, schedule and budget, and overseeing project close-out.

Provide design consultants direction via verbal and written correspondence to identify the scope, budget and schedule for construction projects. Communicate design review comments in writing to the consulting team.

Provide the work unit with communication regarding projects and studies including the status and individual tasks associated with each.

Qualify and select individuals and firms for professional services using Colorado State Buildings procedures based on State of Colorado Statutes.

Make decisions regarding building modifications based on best architectural practices and knowledge of current building codes and standards including required fire rated construction, means of egress, allowable occupant loading and hazardous material usage.

Make construction management decisions which impact the project scope, schedule and budget such as: approval of change order proposals; identification of deficiencies of work in the field, and extensions of time of completion for projects of up to 70 million dollars in value.

Recommend to the Director of the Office of Design and Construction future space needs based on an assessment of space inventory data including the available square footage of office, classroom and laboratory spaces.

Evaluate and approve or deny contractor change order pricing by comparing the proposed costs to an estimate of cost arrived at using RS Means or other cost estimating data.

Evaluate and approve or deny contractor pay applications based on an assessment of partial work in place by inspecting the work in the field and using judgment to determine the percentage of work complete versus the work shown on the contract documents.

Negotiate design fees with professional consultants based on the proposed scope of work and an evaluation of the proposed level of effort and fee schedule.

Lead the project team in design and construction document development.

Manage project budgets and schedule to insure project delivery is on time and on budget.

Represent the Agency's position on issues related to campus design and construction standards, building design parameters, materials of construction.

Review the design work of outside professionals for compliance with International Building Codes.

Provide General Design Support

Assessment and scope development, code review, and sketches or drawings for improvements to campus facilities.

Certify that drawings and specifications for in-house design efforts meet Professional Engineering standards.

Involves developing the process by which drawings are developed, reviewed and certified.

Assist the Work Unit

Collecting and analyzing building and infrastructure data in order to make recommendations for changes to existing space and capital requests for future space in order to meet campus needs for classrooms, laboratories, offices and other space uses, as required.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires investigating field conditions including work that requires climbing ladders to access work above ceilings or on roofs, stooping and bending to investigate work in tunnels. The position is required to make field observations on construction sites that will include walking on uneven surfaces, over and around obstacles, mud, snow, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering from an accredited college or university

Five (5) years of professional experience with design, construction project management and/or construction administration.

Fundamental of Engineering (FE) certification in the state of Colorado, with option to obtain certification within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

More than 5 years experience in mechanical or electrical engineering or project management.

PE License or FE/EIT certification with ability to obtain PE license preferred

Working knowledge of AutoCad and/or Revit.

Knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes, the State Fiscal Rules and State Buildings Programs, or to gain this knowledge within the first three months of employment.

Salary and Benefits
$96,000 - $115,000
